On 20 April 2010, a catastrophic oil well blowout occurred onboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig which resulted in eleven deaths, the demise of the rig, and the largest oil spill in history. The uncapped well impacted both local wildlife and the fishing industry within the Gulf of Mexico.
